Breastfeeding: supply vs. demand

When considering supplementing your breast milk, remember that breastfeeding works as a supply and demand process: the more you nurse your baby, the more milk your body feels it should make, so your supply increases.

Supplementing with formula sends your body a message that you don’t need to make as much milk so your supply will decrease. This will also lower your confidence in your ability to breastfeed.

Breast milk is the perfect food for your baby until you begin introducing other foods at around six months of age. Even then, breast milk should be the main course, until at least one year of age. For more information, contact our lactation specialists at 859-323-4880.
